Journeying with Parishes

Taking the next steps in response in synodal parish development

A 15 month programme of support for leaders in parishes responding to synodal listening

There is no one size fits all model when it comes to developing parishes in a synodal way. Authentic listening and a response to this which draws on the energies and skills of the people of God in that place means something different in each context. There is, however, much to be gained by working with others who want to support the ongoing development of their parish community in a synodal style. If you want support to take the next step on this journey and to be a part of a network like this, this programme could be for you.

More details, and information about how to express an interest in the programme can be downloaded below.

At the start of the 2021-24 global Synod process, parishes put together processes to listen to People of God in their community. So much of what was shared and hoped for concerned the life of the parish itself. Many parishes recognised that, while some matters needed a process by the national or global Church, there was already plenty to get on with locally.

Some parishes showed a strong desire to reach out beyond itself, and in doing this to organise itself better and to work more collaboratively. Others wanted their processes to be more open to the spirit, and to deepen the spirituality of the whole community. Parishes spoke about empowerment of laity, for their community to have a broader vision of its mission, an ethos of accompaniment and more.

The School for Synodality wants to work with a small network of parishes who want to take the next step locally in responding to their synodal listening, and support them in responding in a synodal style to the challenges they face.

What we’re offering

  • Support for those leading in parishes by walking with them and supporting strategic planning processes within parishes so that they can take the next step in their community to respond to the synodal listening that has taken place with the parish community.

  • A formation programme in the form of bi-monthly gatherings with input on topics such a synodal leadership, volunteer management, effective parish communications. Ultimately the topics will be those most relevant to the needs of the cohort.

  • The development of a network of peers who can share and learn from each other across contexts and provide mutual support.

  • Bringing those we’re working with on the programme together in order to pray together, reflect upon and share from their different contexts, but with shared hopes and similar challenges for mutual support.
