‘A Church for the Third Millennium’ feature in The Tablet

“Where parishes are using these tools we are starting to see that synodality is not just a pipe-dream. Like seeds germinating under- ground, green shoots of synodality are appearing in the everyday life of dioceses and organisations in the Church in England and Wales.”
— Avril Baigent, The Tablet

Synodality as the ‘way of being Church in the third Millennium', a term coined by Pope Francis, is the conversion that we are all called to live in our community life . Yet the conversation around the Synod so far has been dominated by major set-piece events in Rome, so many now find themselves asking... where has synodality gone?

Avril Baigent, co-founder of School for Synodality, says it's not meant to be a 'magic wand' but a fundamental change in Catholic culture, and shares in this latest edition of The Tablet a unique perspective gained from looking at Synodality from another angle - grassroots up.

Avril sees the green shoots of synodality appearing in the everyday life of dioceses and organisations in the Church, and gives 3 key lessons learnt from her work with the School for Synodality.
